Have just been wallpapering, now want to paint fire surround matt black.
Its mdf. and a mahogany colour, any tips before I start.

hello im a qualified painter and decorator and the best thing you could of done is paint the fits surround first as it wouldn't of mattered if you had caught the wall. The only tip i could give you is to give the surround a first coat of white matt as this will seal the bear wood and also help the paint cover the mahogany hope this helps and hope it all looks good after you have finished

You should have painted the surround first as lil reca said. The easy way would have given it a sand and a spray with some matt black for cars. The car paint is enamel and will stick to most surfaces so you can give it as many coats as you like. The other alternative is to rub it down mask off around the surround and paint it with blackboard paint. This will probably mean 2 or 3 coats but should give you the desired effect. Remember to use lo-tack masking tape or you will rip the wallpaper.
