hi, we have 2 jack russells we started them on bakers puppy dried food but i read on here that it was the worst food to give them so i changed it to pedigree puppy but they do not like it very much i would be grateful for your thoughts one is 6 months the other is 1year old, they also have a small amount of tin food in the evening.

Bakers can be fine but does love lots of colourings /additives etc ( but if it suits your dogs i wouldn't worry too much ) thousands of people use it with no probs , pedigree is good too but can be too rich for some dogs , they can both go onto junior / Adult varieties really now anyway , the best food is something one coloured and with not too many ingrediants listed , give them a small amount of the tinned meat mixed in with the complete to moisten it , and whatever you try add gradually over a couple of weeks and only buy smallish bags at first so it stays supper fresh , best to go somewhere like PAH and just wander round reading the ingrediants , go for chicken , a good one will have around 25% or look on the csj web site ( bit dear to deliver though ) you can also get intouch with various companies online and ask if they have any free samples etc ( Baileys horse feeds are good for that ) but only do the working dog bites which i use , but they only do that one , which is for adult dogs ( keeps Sammy in tip top cond though )

i swear by purina beta allthough i have the large breed version, but it seems a really good product, i have heard nothing but bad things about bakers, however my friend feeds his jack russel on bakers and always has, his JR is called me!! and can be quite hypo at times, could this be due to the food he feeds her? could be!!

Bakers and Pedigree are as bad as each other (two of the worst foods available), neither are any good for your dog. Both are nutritionally useless and full of rubbish, and Bakers uses ingredients that have been banned from human food because they have been proved to cause cancer - not something you want to feed any living animal! Ignore any brand that advertises on TV, if they are spending that much on advertising, they are probably not spending anything on developing quality food and purchasing quality ingredients - that is not what they rely on to sell their food anyway. If you want to find a good quality food have a look at
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
it is not linked to any dog food manufacturer in any way so it is completely impartial. They look at the ingredients of every food, and assess how good it will be for dogs, they also tell you what to look out for so that you will be able to understand the ingredient list yourself when you go shopping. You may not want to spend the money getting foods that have been awarded the maximum 6 stars, but there is no reason to go anything less that 3 stars, a lot of those foods are cheaper than Pedigree and Bakers anyway (both have one star - in the case of Bakers, only because there is no lower rating).

Wainwrights(from pets at home) dog food is very good, both the puppy and the adult, also Arden grange. Both have very good quality ingredients, have used both brands and my dogs loved them and did very well on them.

my pup is on royal canin and my other dog is on burns, both are really good although i would probably say burns is better... the woman at the pet store told me it only has 7 ingredients in it and various other good things about it, only problem is not many well known places sell it.
This is from burns site "All Burns diets for dogs and cats are hypo-allergenic and free from artificial flavourings, colourings and preservatives"

There are so many good brands its difficult to chose which is best sometimes isnt it.I think it all boils down to firstly a budget because we all got bills to pay etc,and whether a dog is healthy and does well on a particular brand of food, and what suits one dog doesnt necessarily suit annother.
I use Arden Grange at the moment because i can get it for 26 quid a 15kg bag delivered to the door which is cheaper than some other well known good quality brands.I expect if i had to pay full retail price for it i would have to rethink my brand and budget.
