Hi to everyone, i've just become a member tonight so here go's.

My question is,what advice could you give me on buying a Yamaha Thunderace 1000cc bike, what do i need to look out for are there any problems with these bikes ? and what are the running costs like ? brakes, tyres, serviceing etc, etc.
Also i'm hearing a lot of comments about these bikes using a lot of oil,how do i check for this ?(apart from asking the seller for an honest answer).
Any help with the above questions would be very much appreciated,as i have a bike to look at on saturday.

Thank You

Regards

Hamsta.

The Ace is fairly bullet proof but any big high revving sports engine will use oil. You can check the oil level by looking at the dipstick or window in the right hand engine casing.
Make sure the bike is cold when you call out, try to arrive early thus not giving the vendor a chance to warm it up before you come. Any rattles, bangs or smoke will be more noticeable with a cold engine. Don't be afraid to rev it for any tell tale signs.
A fast bike like that may have been raced or seen the wrong side of a hedge so look out for any road rash etc. Have a drive to see if the gearbox is nice & smooth. I've seen 1st gear in the fazer 600 & 1000 give problems.
The expensive part of keeping a sports bike is the consumables e.g. tyres, brakes & discs, fork seals, chain & sprockets etc so make sure these are in order or else bargain the seller down on the price if not.
Don't let my post put you off coz at the end of the day when you're buying 2nd hand, you don't know what you're getting. Ask for service history but if there's none then just use your head & instinct. Check engine/frame numbers against paperwork & bring someone along if you don't trust yourself.
Hope this helps....
