My neighbour came to me very distraught this morning as she had got up and found both her bunnies dead ! She has had them as outside bunnies for nearly 6 years without any trouble, this morning she went to feed them and found one without a head and front legs and the other one complete but dead with eyes wide open !! The only explanation we can all think of is a fox ? But surley there would of been fur everywhere, as hard as we have looked at the run there is no eveidence of fur, footprints etc ... Surley if a fox had them there would of been fur or more as evidence ? And surely the fox would of taken more than just a head and legs ? Does anyone have any light to shed on this ? All help would be greatly appreciated. And did the scond bunny die of the shock ? As we can't find any injuries on her at all !!

well either a cat or a stray dog /cat is a possibility but no the fox wouldnt always take the lot they kill because they can something may also have disturbed it too the second i would agree died of shock yes if she replaces them i would suggest using fox proof wire on the hutches and the runs

hello, dreadfull news, but it still may be a fox as foxes kill or fing dead animals and leave them where they are found or killed and then return to them at a later time, sort of like squirrels burying nuts and then getting them later, chicken wire around would help

Same happened to me! :( It was a fox that had got at mine though for definate! My neighbour lost hers a week later she saw the fox but it was too late. Its true.. they dont always take what they kill, they just kill! sadly thats the animals that they are. But I do think that thats what had your neighbours bunnies.

hi there, it could well of been a fox but if ther was no noticeable damage to the hutch it could well of been a rat or stoat. was the hutch off the ground? as this helps in some instances to protect them but sometimes rats knaw through the wood and they will kill a rabbit. sorry for your friend. xx

Yes agree, probably a fox, they are notorious for taking heads off of chickens, they usually return for what they have killed at a later stage, but don't dismiss a ferret or rat...... sounds like the other poor bunny died of shock.....

I know someone who lives on a farm and she has a very small cat. Last time I was over their her cat dropped a dead rabbit at my feet. So it could have just as easilly been a cat. Really sad though.

Could be a rat..!Years ago i had a huge white female lop bunny, evie, she gave birth to 6 babies and three days later i went to check on them and caught a rat killing them and about to start on Evie, needless to say the one and only time i have ever killed a living being, but i was so angry at the lost of the six little bunnies, barly had a chance. but like i say the Rat was all ready to start on Evie so i imagine if a rat did get a full grown rabbit it may only eat half of it and be full. I would check the hutch for an holes from the sixe of a golf ball up as rats can get in very small places.

i am a shooting man and do vermin controle it sounds as you have a fox they are so many foxes now in our towns that this will become a problem with your pets and may even take a yung baby if they is not anouth food arround they is now casses of foxes biteing us but every one loves foxes till they do harm best advice is to not tempt them and put pets in at night and not to feed them in your gardens they will always come for easy food and then keep comeing if they have cubs near bye

Sorry your neighbour lost their rabbits. We've lost chickens to a fox too, so know how devastating it is. A fox will kill all it can while there are birds/rabbits or whatever still around. They eat or take what they can but will return later to take more - of course by this time you've found the massacre so foxy can't get any more food even though he's already killed it. I don't care what anyone says, a fox does not kill for pleasure, only for food. I like foxes, but ensure my poultry are as well protected as possible, after all the fox is only doing what nature intended & it's a native species, unlike the mink. Your best bet is to use weldmesh instead of chicken wire as a fox can bite through that & make sure it's securely fitted. A few staples is probably not enough to prevent a fox from tearing the wire away from the wood frame. However, it may have been a cat - my cat catches & eats wild rabbits so a docile tame one would be easy to catch.

when i lived at home we had 16 cats mostly rescues that had been dumped or were going to be drowned so they were wize so could catch and eat and fight any thing even after living in a comfy home for years my nutered toms would gang up together and see off any thing from a tom cat that didnt belong to a dog that had strayed in, i now have 5 indoor cats and they will get in rabbit hutch and go to sleep with rabbits but still bash the dog if she upset them. the girls are the worst. dont let it spoil your day tthough its life and goes on ;0)
