Hello has anyone got any advice for me. In the warm weather my 2.5 torbo starts first time, but as soon as the temperatre drops its a bugger to start unless i use easy start. The heater plugs are new and seem to be working. My local garage says it might be the pump diaphram ? any ideas please. Thanks

its or the relay the heater plugs
you have the same problems that i had
if it was the pump diaphram why would the problem only arise in the cold weather

If your van is similar to mine the injection pump is as it says, the pump as well or has yours an external pump?
I think the answer is in your question, warm starts, cold difficult so I would recheck the heater plugs & circuit, is the relay ok, have you a broken wire or corrosion causing resistance? etc

Hi, the relay does stay on for about that length of time although once the engine has been run you don't have to wait for it to go off. It sounds like the relay is ok on that side, if you are sure the glow plugs are ok I reckon you need to check the wiring incase there is a break down so all of the plugs are not working or there is a resistance due to corrosion of a terminal/connection.

Hi with a 12v test lamp place on each heater plug terminal when they are energised, the light will /should come on. (if not check wiring continuity & relay)The feed usually goes to one and each one has a buzz bar (each one is linked via a brass strip)If that is ok check the resistance of each one with a multi meter (buzz bar disconnnected) they should be about the same, if there is one or two with an open circuit reading, they are duff!
If the test lamp fails on all cylinders, quite popular with relays are the earth points, cannot recall the circuits on the relay, but if all else fails give me the Nos on the relay and I will try to tell you what they are for.It is very important to fit the correct heater plugs(even though they look the same) as they still burn after the relay has switchedx off, and can burn out prematurely if incorrect.
If you have to start with laughing gas it points to heater plugs not functioning, and beleive it or not the engine will get addicted to the laughing gas and will not start with out it! Dave G

Hi, I just remembered there is also a cold start device on the injection pump, there is a large connector on the back of the block with a cable leading to the pump. This should be tight when cold to open a part of the injection pump to aid cold start & cold running, when the engine is hot this cable will go slightly slack.
I still think it's the glow plugs though but the cold start to pump is something to check.
