Please help! I'm determined to learnt o navigate the good old fashoined way, but am having real trouble finding a practical, sturdy and reasonably priced (preferably an Astra IIIb) sextant in the uk. So far all roads point to a bigger overdraft or shipping one in from the USA. Does anyone know of any chandlers/shops in the south east (or vaguely near) that could help?

Hello Emmylou, having used a sextant since the fifties the best advice I can give you is, in the first instance, to procure a cheap, well used instrument that probably has enough errors on it for you to learn how to correct them. Try to get one in its original box so that you can also practice how to take it out of the box without dropping it. I am not being facetious, for years this was a favourite manoeuver demanded by examiners of 2nd Mates candidates. New, half decent sextants have always been fairly expensive, but if you do learn to navigate "the good old fqashioned way" you'll probably keep the old "cheapie" you buy to practice on. Bon voyage, Robin.
