i have a ford sierra 1.8gl cvh which has a cold start problem.
the engine starts immediatly whatever the weather but then runs very lumpy and will stop unless revved hard, when reving lots of grey black smoke from the exhaust, problem clears up when engine reaches operating tempreture,
the colder the weather the more pronounced the problem.
recent work includes replacing the crankcase breather hose and a small pipe from the air filter to the carb.
any ideas please.....

Bert Holding is a Carburator genius I believe he modified by,Firstly tuning the car and secondly by fitting some parts to it.
Apart from that it is to long ago for me to remember.
Contact a carb dealer say Weber they used to make carbs for ford the cvh type and the downdraft type

Hi we have a Sierra too and I asked my husband about the autochoke for you, as we never take the car to a garage at all, he does all the work needed
His advice is to replace the bimetallic coil in the autochoke - if that means anything to you.
An alternative to that is to have a manual choke fitted, first thing he did to ours, and if we have any problems with the choke now he can do what is necessary manually.

Hope this helps you .
