hi i am quite knowledgeable with cars city and guilds qualified mechanic but not done anything for a while though i just bought a escort mk5 91 h reg 1.4lx the cambelt snapped so it has a brand new camshaft,hydraulic tappets.valve basically the head is like new no taps or rattles.
the one thing that is gettin to me is on start up it takes quite a few turns to get it fired up ive checked the timing but it also gutless in 1st and 2nd gear i know this sounds silly but i think this could be plugs and leads can someone just confirm this for me thank u

it could be the plugs and leads, or, (please dont take offence) you could have the cambelt a tooth out, on the 1.4 it will run a tooth out, but it'll be a pig to start, and as guttless as a morris minor. the good news is that one tooth out DOES NOT do any damage

i didnt think it has a twin webber carb with the auto choke on it i just chucked another carb on it and it was fine choke was sticking slightly the timing was perfect just a dodgey choke
