Hi Karl,
Have appear to have the exact same problem with my 1.6 Club.
Sometimes it starts first time, others it will turn over for ages and nothing!!!
Both fans appear to run for a period of time after the keys are taken out of the ignition when it won't start.
Had to get the AA to tow me home the other night. They looked at the car for ages and came to the conclusion that the crank sensor was faulty.
I got the car to the garage the following morning, told the guy what had happened and left him to it.
Got a phone call about any hour later saying that the fuel pump relay was at fault???
I collected the car shortly after and it started first time.
I drove the car 4 or 5 times that day with no problems at all then guess what? It won't start again.
Help please anyone!!!

Hi, i drive a 1.4ls 'P' reg, although i dont have the problem you are all describing i may have an answer, has anyone tried changing the ISCV (Idle Speed Control Valve)? Apparently these are the same as the ones on a Fiat Brava (which i owned previous to the Astra) and that is what controls the idle speed when coming to junctions etc, you can take em off and clean em or replace them, might be worth a try, also try cleaning the throttle body.

Thank for the reply.
Idling is not a problem.
Once the car is started, it runs as if it's new.
Getting it running is another matter. There's no spark and the fuel pump don't run. Then all of a sudden it all comes to life and starts.
I've replaced the fuel pump relay, which also provides power to the EGR solenoid, and tried using a link wire to bypass the relay but with no joy.
Starting to think that it is something t do with the Imobilizer, which i believe is built into the engine ECU.
Any ideas!!!

Diagnostics will tell if the immobiliser has a fault. Try to find a garage with for instance diagnostics called Launch X431. That has immob. software on it. Main dealer as last resort.

Hi,
I am having a bit of a problem with my 1.6 1999 astra. The brakelights seem to only work intermittently. At the moment they are almost permanently not working. The one at the top of the boot works fine though. The same thing happens to the reverse light at times, but they dont neccesarily correspond, for example earlier the brakes didnt work, but the reverse light was fine. As far as i can see the fuses and bulbs are all fine.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as this is causing me some head scratching.
Thanx.

Has anyone ever heard or dealt with "The Fishponds Motor Company" in Bristol?
Looking to buy a car and they seem to have some good deals on Astra's but no-one seems to have heard about them. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Marl, check the grounding of the rear light units. Usually there is a wire going to a chassis point nearby. If this point is missing/dirty you will get some interesting effects. It might also be worth checking the cleanliness of the bulbs in their sockets. Achilles

Stopher, check the Lambda sensor. It lives in exhaust down-pipe, purple coloured wire. These are the things that Tesco petrol killed recently. You may find it has become disconnected or maybe it's 'had it'. Achilles

I HAVE A P REG 1.7TD ASTRA. IS MUCH HEAVIER ON DIESEL THAN MY PREVIOUS NON TURBO MODEL. USED TO GET ABOUT 50 TO 55 MPG, NOW AM GETTING ABOUT 40 MPG. IS THIS AVERAGE? IS IT POSSIBLE TO DISABLE THE TURBO AND RUN AS NORMAL 1.7, AND WOULD IT IMPROVE THE MPG? THANX

Hi, can anyone help? My daughter has a 95 Astra 1.4 with ‘Keyless’ door opening (doors are locked/unlocked using the alarm remote control which also operates the central locking). She has changed the battery on the remote and is unable to synchronise it with the alarm/central locking as she has no handbook. Her local Vauxhall dealer was not interested and very unhelpful. Many thanks. Tim.

Tim, put key in ignition, turn to postion 2 (but don't start engine), press lock/unlock buttons on fob. Central locking should respond. Hey presto, key fob programmed. Good luck, Achilles.
