Hi

Please can anyone help. I have an 1.4 16v R reg Astra which i have just been told by dealers who did a diagnostic that I needs a new ECU costing £700 after trying a new coil and sparks with no luck. My engine light has been on for the past 6 weeks..... it cuts out when im slowing down but normally starts straight back up this tends to happen if the car is hot or very cold.....my exhausht sounds like its struggling to blow..... it feels sluggish and slow with no power at all..... also i hear a strange screeching noise when i start my ignition first thing in the morning

Is getting a new ECU the only solution? If not can anyone suggest what is or what else could be wrong with it..... if it is the only solution do i have to get this from vauxhall, does anyone know if i can get this cheaper elsewhere because paying £700 really isnt an option for me

I'd be greatful for any information so feel free to contact me by phone on 07515170090 or reply to me on here - thanks

Hi Leah.
Your problem sounds like the Lambda sensors, these cotrol the fuel and air mixture flow into the engine, I don't know how old your car is, butit's often cheaper to change these sensors than to assume there's a problem of a more serious nature. You may obtain an ECU from a breakers yard for a fraction of the price and they will very often fit the unit for you. The squeeling noise you hear as you start up your engine is likely to be the alternater/fan belt. But check that you have plenty of oil in your engine first. please let me know if this has been helpful, cheers Herbie.

Hi herbie

I have just had an electrician out to check my car (its 10 years old) who said he thinks its the coil and that the car is only running on 3 valves..... and believes vauxhall didnt try a new coil on my car like they said they did...... i am going to go to a different garage on monday and get them to try a new coil...... if that fails i will tell them about the sensor that you have suggested to me because i want to keep my cost as low as possible!! I will keep you posted.... thanks leah

I have had my astra for five years now, but just recently did the same thing,
the garage i usually use, told me that it is the lambda probe that needs replacing,
this should be done when you have a new exhaust fitted, cos by some coincidence they forgot to tell me that.
hope this helps jacs

Shaker, crawl into rear of vehicle, remove plastic cover from inside tailgate. You will then be able to access the mechanism. If you raise the actuating lever, the boot will open & you can work on it more comfortably. If that fails to open it, you can, with more difficulty, remove the screws that secure the fixed post to the sill. I have used a small Molewrench for this. With the boot open, lubricate & operate the mechanism a few times to free it so it will work next time. If not, get another from a scrapman.Achilles.

hi achilles
glad you are still on here. It's been a while for me but still having one problem after another with my 03 plate astra sxi.
I've had problems with it bunny hopping like its trying to cut out, last night it did the same all the way home from work then the engine management light came on.
The garage said it is definately the coil pack and are charging me £200 to sort the problem.
firstly, is this reasonable
is this the most likely problem given whats been happening
and also, if this is the correct diagnostic, could it cause a burning smell inside the car as this has been an ongoing problem too

cheers samantha

Sorry to hear things aren't going well with your Astra. Sadly, I don't know much about the 'modern' Astras & can't tell you much as I have never seen under the bonnet of one. However, in general, poor sparks can certainly cause the signs you describe. I can image that a fancy coil pack doesn't come cheap & given the erratic way that garages go about fixing things, the labour cost will be a large part of the bill. Overheated insulation causes a smell like burned fish. I really hope that the garage has fixed the problem, in which case £200 is worthwhile. If you can now trust the thing to go from A to B without letting you down, it will be money well spent. Achilles.

Hi Samantha, I read about your problem, firstly that does seem very steep if you can, shop around.
Did your problem start after driving through a lot of water? Or heavy rain? If so, I would be dubious as to the problem being the coil pack, more likely to be a damp connection. I had an identicle problem with a Nissan Micra, (that's not mine) It turned out to be a wet HT lead from the coil to the distributor, it still started and ran but cangarooed all over the road. I actually stripped down the carburetor thinking it was dirt.
The HT lead (high tension) comes from the coil. use a dry tissue with a match and dry out the inside of the connection, likewise with the lead, if there's any damp there your problem is solved. Do go and get a second oppinion before wasting your money, coil problems tend to be intermittent. Herbie

Cheers herbie, think i'll give that a whirl tomorrow. Unfortunately i didnt have time to waste as i had work at 8 tonight and hd to take the chance to get my car back.
the problem is certainly much better than before but is still jumping but intermitently now.

Gilbert, there are two bushes involved, vertical & horizontal. The first is must more likely to fail but whichever it is, I have not been able to devise a way to change them without removing the 'wishbone' arm entirely. You may be lucky & have a car where the previous owner lubricated the bolts. Otherwise, it's a pig usually. This is no beginners DIY job. Being mean by nature, I buy & fit the bushes for £5 but complete arms can be obtained for approx £26. It's a fair bet that it will not be only one side that needs doing.Find a backstreet repairer! Hi, I've got a problem with my '93 opel astra hatchback refusing to start.

The problem started while driving, suddenly, I could smell melting/burnt plastic, the ecu light came on, and I seemed to lose most of the engine power. I idled in to a parking lot and turned off the ignition. After having popped the bonnet, I smelled more of the same, but no smoke or fire visible from anywhere.

After a little while, I tried starting the engine again, and it fired up, bur I turned off the ignition as the smell again grew stronger.

Now there's no sign of ignition, just starter motor turning when I try to start.

Today, I went over with a paper clip to read out the ecu, and got codes 63 and 25, which I've googled to find means the injector valve and the amp control signal for cylinders 2&3 receive low voltage. I presume (by now) there's a short circuit or similar somewhere as the smell came back.

Would anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong or where to start looking?
