Gilbert, there are two bushes involved, vertical & horizontal. The first is must more likely to fail but whichever it is, I have not been able to devise a way to change them without removing the 'wishbone' arm entirely. You may be lucky & have a car where the previous owner lubricated the bolts. Otherwise, it's a pig usually. This is no beginners DIY job. Being mean by nature, I buy & fit the bushes for £5 but complete arms can be obtained for approx £26. It's a fair bet that it will not be only one side that needs doing.Find a backstreet repairer! Hi, I've got a problem with my '93 opel astra hatchback refusing to start. The problem started while driving, suddenly, I could smell melting/burnt plastic, the ecu light came on, and I seemed to lose most of the engine power. I idled in to a parking lot and turned off the ignition. After having popped the bonnet, I smelled more of the same, but no smoke or fire visible from anywhere. After a little while, I tried starting the engine again, and it fired up, bur I turned off the ignition as the smell again grew stronger. Now there's no sign of ignition, just starter motor turning when I try to start. Today, I went over with a paper clip to read out the ecu, and got codes 63 and 25, which I've googled to find means the injector valve and the amp control signal for cylinders 2&3 receive low voltage. I presume (by now) there's a short circuit or similar somewhere as the smell came back. Would anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong or where to start looking?

Gerard, This is Nature's way of telling you that your gearbox is 'shagged'. It is technically difficult, expensive & time-consuming to fix it. Go to a scrap man & get another gearbox. This is a popular vehicle, you will find one. Beware of early ones, often 4-speed when the gearbox casing says it is 5-sp. Whether you repair or replace, it still has to come out & go back in again. This process is much easier than you might think. While you are at it, do not omit to renew the clutch, unless you have done so recently. Cheap, essential. Achilles.

I've taken it in to the main dealers for a diagnostic tec test and they cannot find anything wrong!! Does anybody have any suggestions as to what may be wrong with it? Cheers

Hi The problem is recently i've noticed that the heating in my astra van (1.7 tdi izuzi engine) seems to not work, ive had a slight leak to one of the hose's (which is now fixed). The engine seems to overheat, i've changed the thermostat but still seem the same. could there be an air lock in the system that causes this problem. cheers biggee

I have an Astra 1998 1.8 Twin cam Auto too. I had a similar problem, which turnout to be the Auto gear box gear electronic selector, mounted on top of the gear box. This was only found after diagnosies by my local dealer. It done the very same thing too, flashing 'S' light on the instrument panel, and very sluggish on take off, which indicates the car is in 'Limp mode', in other words, get you home mode. It often used to clear for a couple of, but then reappear when most did not need it. I feel your right with the oil change, but let me know how you go.

G, live a little, put your foot down. Go for a 'drive' like in the old days. Burn off the coke. Otherwise, you aren't going to pass the next yearly test & we don't want that, do we? If that fails to do the trick, it is probably the sensor that lives in the exhaust manifold. At least you can get at it. Undoing it could be something else. Achilles.

Oxygen sensor on engienen exhaust manifold. It 'reads' only when engine has warmed to normal running temperature. Achilles

Sounds like a damaged valve. It is usually an exhaust valve. Check the compression. Achilles

ScorpionYour car's alternator needs replacement/ refurbishing.. Quite common on 1.7 DTi Astras after 4-5 years. What's the mileage on your car?
