Cheap!!!
That word and MOT dont really com in hand tbh LOL jokes aside though Does ur astra have a cat??? (catalytic converter) on older cars u only had the 1 if at all, more modern vehicles from about 1998 some have 2 a pre and mid sectioned cat!
but if urs does, then that may need looking at, along wid sections concerning within the engine block, as these can dramatically solve ur problem but we will get to those in due course!!

Thanks for your advice, I'm taking car to garage on Monday to see which cat is on my car, they said there is 2 types one costing £150 the other £250. I have also been told to change the lamba sensor. But what worries me is the garage has said this may not solve the problem.
What are these sections in the engine block, that sound quite concerning?

Yea u can have a pre cat and a mid section cat! both on a car at the same time! if u only have 1 cat it will be the mid section cat which can be a straight through,(joint with the middle box (section) of the exhaust system! Or it may be a seperate cat from the mid box, that is closer to the engine then the exhaust tip!

Dawn, you don't say which faults you know about as a result of the diagnostic tests. Are these engine or engine management unit tests? Are the faults now fixed but the car still has the problem? Look back at earlier questions as this sounds like weak sparks. Get garage to check sparks, especially when hot. I don't know about 'modern' models but assume they use the same technology to generate sparks as the older ones. The external coil & coil module used to be unreliable, making the car a total pain to drive. Does yours refuse to start after filling with petrol? Mine caused huge queques at filling stations until I fitted a better coil module. Achilles

Alias Daz,
Thanks for your help with my car. I took the car to another garage and they seem to think the emission readings were so high the cat would not cause the problem. On the off change we changed the lambda sensor and the car went staight thought the mot!!!!
Thanks again for your advice.

Hi there I've recently had problems with my y reg astravan 1.7 dti Isuzu engine and wondered if anyone might know what is causing.
Occasionally, when stopped and idling say at lights or junction, the rev counter fluctuates by 200-300rpms and the speedo flickers between 0-15 mph. Very strange.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have been trying to find the ADL test plug to do the paperclip test... where is it?? I've looked everywhere as suggested by the 'buzz' site and other sites, but to no avail. Who knew so many parts came off my car. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I totally dismantle my car, thanks. Been in fuse box, tried behind the handbrake and inbetween handbrake and gearbox.....

Mine is just in front of driver's right knee. I also read that it may be in fuse/relay box under bonnet on firewall near-side. May possibly be behind carpet near front door lower hinge. Near handbrake? Unlikely. I wish you luck in deciphering the results. Personally, I have had more sense from the Oracle at Delphi. Remember there are many 'old-fashioned faults' that will not show up on this test. Achilles

re intermitent fault eg cut out on astras dear members i have posted details on this problem before so try this one i personally have cured numerous astras ,the fault in question does not show up on vauxhall diagnostic i have found the fault on many an astra to be the ignition module located under the coil pack its a small black box with a fairly large plug plugged in to it unplug it and there are several pins there clean them up if needed and bend them slightly to make a tighter fit this has done the trick on many an astra ,also old ignition modules from cavaliers are of the same type and actually a tighter fit ,i fitted one off a 1987 cavalier to an astra 1997 hope this helps

I am the owner of a 53 astra sxi, we service it annually and have never had problems until 6 months ago. We had a serious oil leak and the car lost a lot of power, a machanic replaced the coil pack with a genuine second hand one because the seal on the coil pack had caused the leak. 3 months later, the car completely run out of power and when another mechanic checked it, it was completely out of oil (no oil light came on), the EML came on. Our original mechanic took it into a garage and replaced the secondhand coil pack with a competely new one, i am not sure if this part is genuine. Last week, the car starting to stall and when checking the oil it was completely 'bone dry' again. Now devastated, now started to make a clicking noise in the engine and when you unscrew the oil cap it gives a 'sucking' noise. We filled the oil and it started smoking heavily. Our mechanic has taken it away and he is now telling us the best case scenario is a valve needs to be replaced, the worst case scenario - a new engine! Are we being taken for a ride? and does anyone know where the problem lies or what caused it/blame? Thanks
