What they tell you is incorrect. The ECU has a better memory than an elephant. You can read what it tells you using only a paperclip, several sites tell you how. Or find a better garage, not a Vauxhall dealer. Achilles.

By a total co-incidence, I encountered the same problem recently. It turned out to be the connections in the back of the radio unit. Maybe the plug/socket is not properly engaged or maybe a pin is damaged. Removing the radio & refitting it firmly cured the problem. Good luck.

That is something I thought as well.. 2 issues with this leg of diagnostics:
1. There is only 1 plug/ socket at the back of CD changer and it is powering up/ making noises... Does that mean that it should it be connected to the main CD headunit?

2. Also When I remove the headunit, there is base plate/ cage behind it. There is no way I can see the wiring for CD changer unless I remove the cage/ base plate.. Do I need to do that? The reason I've not done that so far is because I believe the loom/ plug for CD changer is part of ISO loom for the main CD headunit and there would be spare plugs/ connectors behind base plate to check...

Am I right in my assumptions or would you like me to take the base plate out and do the checks by taking off all connectors and inspecting pins one by one.

Thanks so much for your help...

All I know is that a poor fit at the rear of the radio caused the problem with a similar unit. A visual inspection & ensuring the unit goes 'home' completely is really all you can do. Does your unit have the remote display? If so, does it show anything or is it blank? Achilles

I've found that you can get to the wiring behind the head unit by taking off the glove box (only 6 torx-20 screws). So I will try that and see what happens.

There are no other issues at all with the CD player headunit. Remote (centre dash) display, phone, satnav, everything is working fine and being displayed correctly on the centre display...

Hope a re-fit would solve this. Would owe u atleast a pint if it did :-)

An update:

I opened the glove box and found a 4 pin flat-type connector dangling from one of the many looms behind the glove box and close to cage. It might belong to CD changer's connection to the Siemnes CD headunit. I will try to take the headunit and cage out and see if the dangling 4-pin connector can go into any spare socket behind the cage..

At the moment I do not have a long enough extension arm in my socket set to take the centre torx screw off the cage to take it out... will update as soon as I get one..

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Achilles, I opened the back of CD player and took the cage out and the wiring connector (big grey connector) as well, all the pins are intact and connected well, both for the socket and connector behind the CD player.

Please check a dangling unconnected 4 pin flat type connector in the attached pic. I could not figure out where it would go. I was hoping that it was for CD changer's connection to CD player but could not find a spare socket for this connector in the CD player or in the wiring (visible area).

Any idea where this connector would go please?

Also would it be possible to get the pinout diagram for the main Siemens CD player and find out which is the pin for CD changer. I can then take it out again and make sure that pin is populated in the back of CD player.

Cheers...

Hi dont know if you got your problem sorted but i had exactly the same symptoms with my astra dti and was told that it was the glow plugs so i had them changed and it made no difference! I took it to another garage who eventually found that the problem was that the injectors were leaking. I had them fixed and, touch wood, it now starts first time, although i still have a problem with the engine management light which comes on constantly and when it does it goes into safe mode and loses all power but nobody seems to know why this is happening!

Hey,

I share a R reg (98) Astra 1.6 with my mate. She's had the car a year and it's been fine. I started driving it in January and from about March onwards we've had major problems with the gearbox. Previously very smooth it, I started having trouble getting into fifth gear. This was okay as I could get around without it, then the problem moved to first! Now it is mostly okay but it has it's days and I really don't want to knacker out the car starting too often in second gear.

With fifth, I find it feels as if it's going in but is clearly in 3rd instead. First is slightly different - it feels as if there is no first gear and it's hitting some kind of wall, but again works fine some of the time.

Any ideas? Cheers, Susie

Hi
I have a 1996 astra 1.4 ls. It has failed its mot on emisions. I have changed the coolant temp sensor but the fault is still there. Its runs fine when cold and does not cut out. When it is warm, the orange light keeps coming on but goes out soon and the engine feels like it has no power at all. Ive had a tech2 check done but it tells me its the coolant temp sensor. It uses way too much fuel and all four plugs are sooty all the time. Also, when run from cold, the revs stay up at 1400 and only go back to normal if car stops at a junction for more than 15 secs. After that it revs drop to normal tick over. The temp guage struggles to get above cold but even when it is it is still the same. Its doin my head in

Any ideas please

Susie, it is highly unlikely that your gearbox is failing one gear at a time. Your problem is more likely to be that the clutch is not de-clutching properly due to slack in the actuating cable or wear in the mechanism. You don't report any unusual noises so in the short term, get a man to take up the slack using the adjuster. Easy to find, righthand side of the big dirty thing, on top of gearbox. It can usually be done by hand, unless the threaded bit is rusty. That should get you going but you may well need a new clutch. Again, not difficult but I wouldn't takle it as a first automotive project. Best of luck, Achilles.

Parki, have you checked to see if the coolant thermostat is stuck open? Achilles

Susie, reading your tale of woe again, there is another possibility. Maybe the gearchange linkage is loose/bent/out of adjustment. The only thing against this idea is that you would expect it to affect say 5th, or !st, not both. There may be a lot of slop in the linkage & it is the spring bias towards 3rd/4th that actually enables you to use these gears successfully. Get down & dirty to check if the linkage appears taut or sloppy. Unless very slim, you will need to raise the front or side of the vehicle. Support it well before you crawl under, do not reply on the jack. I still think it may be a clutch problem, particularly if it has been abused a lot through starting in 2nd gear. Be lucky, Achilles

Hi All,

I own a 2001 vauxhall astra 1.4, 16 valve.
Could someone please tell me how to separate the fuel strainer from the fuel pump? The hanes manual I've got for the car does not tell how. Thanks in advance.

Jim

i was told that the temp guage reading in the car does not affect the ecu but if the engine is always running cool, would this affect the choke settings making the car over fuel all the time?
