this could be the crank shaft sensor, when it gets too warm it will cut the engine out, only costs about £30ish, but get the AA or RAC to fit you one, will save on the labour then.

RandomGuy,I drive a 2001 vauxhall 1.4 16 valve ecotec. I too experienced a similar problem as yours while driving along one week ago...dashboard warning lights heavy steering etc. Also hoping for someone to suggest where to start with diagnosis.

Well I have took the astra 1.4 merit to the garage and they cannot find anything wrong with it. I was told it was the idle speed control and told the garage but they said not. It still cuts out when I slow down and it stopped on a roundabout a few weeks ago I haven't driven it since. Is the idle speed control easy to fit cos can't afford garage again. Any help would be appricated.

I forgot to add the distributor has been changed and it's had new plugs. The engine management light comes on when it's dying. Other people have driven this car and it's been fine for them. When i do get it going after it cuts out it feels wobbly like a valve is sticking or its being starved. Please help cos some people think it's me cos I'm a women, I have been driving for years starting off with vivas but this astra is driving (I wish) me mad.

hi zeddybear it could be the "idle potiometer" at fault they are £75 from vauxhall but you can get them on Ebay for belive it or not £7.99 and £5 postage the item number is (Item number: 280213380694 ) if you want to have a look. I am not saying it is this but its the cheapest part to replace the Idle control valve in £90 in vauxhall although these can be obtained cheaper on Ebay. Both parts fit on the throttle body thats under your air cleaner you will need torque sockets to get them off they have special screws. Wonder how i know all this lol my Astra is suffering from high idle speed been changing all kinds (no faults come up on a diagnostic have taken it to three different gararges no one can figure it out even tho they still charge me.hope that helps lol Demonteddy

If Golf or Astra don't work for you, buy a Focus, real quality at value price. Currently running my third one and no issues (touchwood)!
