Hi I have a 1.7 cdti 2003 astra. Car starts ok when cold but once driven it takes 5-6 times to start when parked. Very annoying when filling up at a garage. Can anyone help me before I go down what sounds like the expensive route of going to a dealers ???

RE 1.4i Astra cutting outHas anyone tried the Throttle Sensor.(this sit next to the Idle Valve on the main trottle body) I have done a diagnostic check on this and the readind states Throttle Sensor Valve voltage Low. I replaced this with a breakers yard part and cured it from cutting out 100% of the time to happening once or twice a day. I may replace it with a new part but I hope this help everyone with this problem

hi joe, your car needs to go on a diagnostic machine, its probably a sensor somewhere, expect a £50+ bill, plus the part, your petrol light coming on is the sender unit in the tank probably, weather the two lights coming on are linked i dont know, tommy

hi barry, you shouldn't really be driving it, the no heat is because you dont have enough water in the system, where is the water leaking from, i would suspect either the water pump or radiator, after checking all the clips on the rubber hoses, the worst case scenario is the head gasket has gone, which is why your using water, have you got oil in your water, and water in your oil, or when your driving have you noticed steam or smoke coming from the exhaust, you need to get it looked at tommy

Hey guys!I know its been a while since any one posted on this topic. But recently I bought an 1997 1.4 (Hi-T) astra and it has the same intermittent problem where it cuts out! I was searching for causes when i came across this topic! Last night i was just sat in my car with the engine running and i was pumping the clutch when all of a sudded the engine cut out! i kept the cluth in and tried to restart the enginge but it wouldn't start. I then took my foot off the clutch and tried to start the engine and it started first time! I then tried pumping the clutch again and the engine cut out! Some of you may have noticed that it cuts out whilst driving when going into a lower gear or something like that. This is when you are also using the clutch! Do any of you have the same problem still? If so, sit in your astra with the engine idling and pump the clutch! it is an intermittent issue so it might not happen the first time you try it! But give it a few tries and let me know!..

hi, what happens if you sit in your car revving the engine @ 2,000rpm while parked, and work the clutch peddle, i think its maybe the idle control valve/sensor that's faultytommy

There is no rev counter in my car so i dont know when i am at 2000rpm!!! i can give it a try though, but what difference would it make revving the car and pumping the clutch as the car cuts out when its just idling and im pumping the clutch??!?

ok, does it cut out when you get to a junction and you put your foot on the clutch, could be the idle control valve/sensortommy

Got a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXi 16 VAlve 52 plate. Had exhaust emissions light come on bout 2 months ago. Was put on a reader which came up with misfiring on third cylinder. Fitted new spark plugs, filters, oil change, coil pack. Light still on. On solid when doing slow speeds, go above 30-40 light flashes, sounds like a nail, very lumpy, but runs ok. Now been told by garage they think its the engine management wiring harness from the ECO, this costs £170. This part has been removed, stripped and checked with a fine tooth comb, no wear, burns, melts, etc, everything spotless. when fitted back on car light went off for half hour then back on. Any ideas at all, spent a small fortune on this heap, garage is running out of ideas and i am running out of money

Maybe you do really have a misfire on cylinder 3. It could be a damaged valve. You seem to have checked or changed most other things. A compression test would give the answer. A damaged valve, usually the exhaust, would make the engine run roughly at low speeds. The exhaust gas sensor seems to work only when the engine is up to temperature. Incorrect combustion from a misfiring cylinder will be interpreted correctly as a problem. Achilles

More than likely the idle control valve is causing it to do this, very common fault on vauxhallsNige

Richard, is there any blue smoke comin from the exhaust because the only way your car burns a lot of oil is via the piston rings and your car would smoke like a good un under acceleration. It might well be the rocker cover gasket, look for oil leaks round the top of the engine itself. How much oil are you usin a week, what are the plugs like when you take them out, are they wet with oil? what colour are they before you clean them? Nige

Hi guys,Quick update regarding the issue with my 1.4 cutting out. It turns out it was the ignition module. This was overheating and causing the car to switch itself off, hence no lights on the dash. The car is now running fine :D
