Ukbilla

The speedo is still working, I am convince that it might be a mechanical error, according to the agents the elctronics ECU ets is fine.

Kind Regards

Hi all
I have a problem with my 1.6 eco astra 1999
Last week the engine light came on and we got home in limp mode (just)
Checked with paper clip and got a right jumble of slow eratic flashes.
Had car booked in for code check down local garage but the starter motor seem to be siezed and would not turn over.
Now all has gone ape, when try to start just get a click and all the dials click backwards 3 times, central locking mucks about (very eratic) did read about ignition key hard to remove (which it is) may cause starter motor to short out, but cant find anything now.
help !!!!!!!!!!!

Poor Shelly, you have an unusual problem. As you suspect, most noises become louder with engine speed. The old-fashioned way to diagnose is to get a long screwdriver or a stick, put one end to your ear & place the other end on suspect parts. When the noise is loudest/clearest, there you have it. Easier said than done though. My first thought is the alternator, the fan makes a whirring noise & it is easily disconnected simply by slackening the drive belt. Water pump bearings could also do this but you can't disconnect this item. If you do suspect the water pump, fix it straightaway as it will strip the teeth from the cam belt when it seizes. Not a nice job due to poor access but it is vital. Achilles.

Hi shelly
does this noise only start after a while or when you stop, because it may just be your kenlow cooling fan. This automaticly comes on whenever your engine get hotter. you can see your temp gauge on your dashboard, if it goes slightly higher than normal this fan cutts in to cool the engine you will see the temp gauge lower slightly & the fan will cut out.
Be carefull if you look under the bonnet because this fan (which is bolted to the radiator) comes on with no warning and can be dangerous if it catches your hands hair ete.
Also check you water & oil levels car will over heat if these are low.

Hi all, I have an x reg zkse astra auto club estate and have a problem I cant get to the bottom of. The car runs great but every now and again it seems to start misfiring and then stalls when cornering or slowing down. It restarts by having to put my foot on the gas pedal and turning it over til it starts (it normally starts at the touch of the key ) . after this it runs great again .Had it checked out on diagnostic etc but no fault is apparent and no engine management light comes on when it happens. It started about a year ago by doing it once a month but now does it every day ! Any help would be gratly appreciated..Ultramol..

Hi,i have just put a new battery onto my 1997 vauxhall astra artic and it drains overnight, the alternator voltage is 14.78 when charging the battery, any ideas what could be draining the battery so quickly,i know, how long is a piece of string haha, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Poor Harpo. Are you sure this battery is connected with the correct polarity? I have seen DIYers connect incorrectly & the results can be very strange. Firstly, your voltage is way too high. Apart from anything else, this will blow all the bulbs pretty rapidly. Do you know that this battery & alternator are any good? An internal open circuit in the battery will cause a high charging voltage but normally the regulator's internal regulation should prevent such a high figure from being reached. You don't say what propted you to buy a new battery. It is unusual to have a battery 'die' in warm weather. Achilles

Thanks for the reply, the original battery died whilst i was on nights so just assumed i needed a new one so off i went and put a new one on,it lasted for a few days but was very sluggish to start then after a week died again,i called out green flag and they jump started it for me and tested the recharge voltage from the alternator which is the 14.7 volts, they told me to give it a run and go back to get the battery drop tested, kwick fit dont drop test any more but checked it out and said all seemed ok.
The car started ok and i stopped and started a couple of times as i was out and about,i parked up for the night, came out at 5-30am to go to work and the battery was dead again, bleeding cars hey haha.
Im not sure what is happening but it seems like the voltage is draining from somewhere, there is no alarm fitted so cant be that.
Thanks again for the reply Achilles

Have you checked the battery voltage when it wont start ?
It may be just down to a dirty/corroded earth strap to engine or battery or starter motor itself, it is useualy the strap to the engine block at battery or engine end just corroded. Undo bolt clean and replace .
If your battery is low volts at the battery then its a duff battery or you have a drain ( could be anything) try leaving battery - lead off while not in use and see if ok when you reconect it.

shelleybaby, is it whirring all the time?

Could be a stack load of things, rad fan, water pump, cambelt rollers, thrust bearing.

Where bouts id the whirring coming in the engine bay?

Further to my earlier reply, I just remembered that if even one of the diodes in the alternator go short-circuit, the battery will drain overnight.
It also plays havoc with the charging circuit as you are getting AC, not DC to the battery when engine is running. A proper auto electrician, (not sad b*****s like rescue folks) will diagnose this one in a ziffy. Disconnecting the battery overnight is definitely a good move. I would say that the problem is not due to the battery, although this one seems to have had a hard life so far. If it was mine, I would probably disconnect the alternator plug & slacken drive belt so it is not driven. But you may well find the belt drives the steering pump too. Achilles.

Hello UK, I'm sorry to hear of your experiences with the garage. I guess it is a Vauxhall agent. You don't tell us much about the problem with your vehicle. What is it that you don't like about it?
