I have a K reg 1.4ls AUTOMATIC the reason I emphasise auto is because I think this is a key to the problem. When started cold and put into 'D' the orange S lamp flashes the car also seems like it's stuck in gear 3 and it wont kick down however this only rectifies after driving for 15mins switching off & re-starting a garage told me the transmission fluid needs changing but I'm a bit sceptical as all garages want an easy quick cash job as well as illuminating the problems, what is the thermo switch for on the gearbox also

Fascinating and useful line of posts here, though I don't see an immediate answer to my problem. Have just collected 1992 1.4i merit estate which had been parked on the street for 6 months. Used a spare battery to retrieve it after lengthy fun and games with .... a broken set of jump leads (moral - check your leads if things are not making sense!). Started easily, drove 90 miles sweet as a nut except for developing a blow in middle box. 3 days later after someone else had moved the car at work, I came to it 30 mins later - non-starter. Battery fine, cranks strongly but no firing at all. Using a spark tester whilst cranking I get a momentary flash into and out of the distributor each time the ignition is switched on and starter operated but then nothing. Switch off / on and starter again - instant flash then nothing. I'm hoping this is going to make perfect sense to someone out there with a bit more ignition knowledge than me. Go on, prove me right...

Forgot to mention, I also have no alternator light when ignition switched on - though I can't be certain whether or not this was the case prior to non-starting problem.

OK - I'm started! Found details of the paper clip trick somewhere on net and rushed out excitedly to find the answers. No faults reported, only the 1.2 cycling code. BUT then tried the starter while A&B were still shorted and bingo - started immediately. Still no alternator light but I'll try a new bulb on that. Anybody have a logical explanation for this? Happy it's started but don't like things I don't understand.

I've got a 1996 1.4 ls astra with no problems but the ecu light keeps coming on. It tends to come on not long after I start my journey when I'm driving down a hill.
Any Ideas?????????

Hi chopper I replaced the coolant temp sender, no change. The o2 sender in the exhaust looks very rusty does it come out easily or do i risk damaging the exhaust manifold? Is it also known as a lambda sensor?

JDF My sensor looked knacked but came out resonably easy with the right ring spanner. Its called the exhaust gas oxygen sensor. (I seem to remember the guy at the garage saying he was doing a LAM check?) My problems ceased when i fitted the coolant temp sensor but it could be possible that if any of the sensors are iffy there could be a running poblem sorry i cant be of more help astras are great cars but a pain if you cant track the problem. Wiring - I've got a SC201 stereo in my Astra - I've just got a Delco CDR500 CD head unit but in display on the dashboard doesn't work. Is the wiring different between these two units?

Hello fellow Astra sufferers I too have an L reg. 1.4 Astra that is driving me crazy. It all began last summer in very hot weather (rare, I know) Engine maintenance light came on and the car died whilst driving along. Started a few minutes later. It happened again twice, also in warm weather, I called out the RAC, when they arrived the car started and no fault could be found. Eventually I was told that because it was an intermittent problem it was likely to be the ignition module so I got this replaced (£50) to no avail. Since then I have had new plug leads, new fuel filter and on Christmas Eve a temperature switch on the manifold. All to no avail. It has broken down three times today. Sometimes it cuts out whilst cruising, which is like someone slamming the brakes on and a bit scary. Then other times it does it when stationary and ticking over, it revs up then dies. However the engine turns over when I try to restart, but just won't kick in. I leave it for a minute or two and then it starts. There seems to be no pattern so I'm constantly on tenter hooks. I've been to main dealer for a full diagnostic check and they found nothing. Coil, distributor, Cat, fuel, carberetor are all suggestions so far, but how much do I spend before resolving? Please help. Bev. (lady driver)

hi bev
take a good look round all pipes on intake side inlet manifold and see if any pipes split as this would cause your engine to rev and die also check petrol cap breather holes for blockage as this would cause a vapour lock in the tank especialy in hot weather causing your car to cut out and not start again untill had a rest try running car without petrol cap for a trip to see if their is any difference let me know open to discussion

Chopper. Thanks for the advice. I think the best line to follow is work my way round all the sensors, replacing all I can and hopefully gain some success there. I have a new O2 sensor just waiting for the weather to allow me to fit it!!

I have a 1.4 16v Astra registered October 03. When driving at very low revs with minimal throttle opening the car jerks along the road. The car has had new EGR valves and nothing shows on a diagnostic check. Has anybody else experienced such a problem.

I have a 00 (X) 1.6 SXI and a couple of nights ago I, simultaneously, lost the instrumentation and central console (Heater etc) illumination. I have checked the usual culprits:- light switch unit, wiring interface and loom, the connectors on the heater unit and all the fuses (just in hope as this circuit doesn't appear to run through a fuse!?!). As well as the lights failing the multi display doesn't dim when the lights are turned on and the dimming switch fails to dim this unit. I'm assuming that they are all linked but what is the answer - I really don't want to remove the steering wheel to see if the lamps in the instrument cluster have all failed together...!!

Hi Guys n Gals, Newbie here.
I have a similar problem with my Mk 3 K reg Astra 1.4 LSi. I had a Cat on it for about 3 years that I have recently discovered to be completely hollow and was for most of this time, also it ran fine and quite pokey, never missed a beat. However, as it failed its emissions test (previously passed begrudgingly) I bit the bullet and put a new cat on it. The retest then showed that the HydroCarbon content of the exhaust was off the scale. The car now runs like a bag of spanners at idle and burns more fuel than the space shuttle. The Engine management light also comes on now and again when it feels like it but nothing seems different with the running when its on. I can smell the petrol when starting up and as an added bonus when I blip the throttle it sometimes lifts the revs up and then it falls down to cut out. It does start straight away though. It does get better over 2000rpm though.
I have replaced the Oxygen sensor, cat, plugs and alternator and it now runs worse than ever before. When replacing the plugs they were very black and furry although dry. It is burning about twice the fuel it should. A recent run to Nottingham cost me twice the amount with no deviation from driving style. (Fast).
Would a simple battery disconnect / ECU reset do it??
Any ideas please help.
Thanks all in advance.

Well thanks Phil, I'll certainly pass on your advice to the bloke who maintains my car, let's hope this solves it. Very kind of you and if it works, I'll report back. Having said that, it's been absolutely fine since last Friday, can you believe it? I've probably spoke too soon. As I said before there seems to be no pattern. Thanks again.Bev.X

Cheers Moz, I'll give it a go, although if I drive to the scrappy with mine at the moment, I'm quite likely to leave it there! Would a knackered ECU cause it to missfire, rev and die, not restart until it's ready etc? What about the imobiliser? When its conked it turns over but won't kick in, just as though the imobiliser is on???? on the odd occassion I've triggered the imbiliser the switched it off again and the car starts, but that doesn't always work? I have an L reg 1.6 Astra with an immobiliser, which used to cut out. I gently cleaned the surface of the immobiliser key with a mild abrasive and that cured the problem. However my orange warning light is almost always on, but I ignore it......
