96 Fiesta Door Lock Problem

The exterior door handle does not do anything, and the interior handle only works to open the door. It 'feels' like something is stopping the mechanism from going into the 'lock' position...if i push the interior handle inwards (as if to lock the door) it won't go. I have removed the door trim, and the sound proofing polythene sheet, and can see the locking mechanism, but have not tried to remove it. I have used WD40 everywhere but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem, or alternatively how much it will cost to replace the lock (but keep the same key). Thanks for any help,
