Escort 1.4 LXi - intermittent idling and cut off

My brother has L-reg Escort, and while driving it suddenly cust off. And while stopped at traffic lights - the idling is very erratic - and one can feel the jerks. While in the garage I have had all the filters changed, spark plugs, oils, and the engine coil changed also - but still nothing. Any ideas... Khalid

every now and again, it'll accelerate, or rev like mad if it's out of gear or the clutch is in; it used to cut out a bit, but i think that was something to do with the battery in mine at least, because it's sorted now with a new battery.. a mate of mine who in some kind of car place (i don't know exactly what he does, but he knows a thing or two) thought it was something to do with the single point injection or the automatic choke, so told me to go to a place near where he works, where i'm going on friday to get it checked out. sorry i couldn't be more help.
