Hi, could anyone tell me if its possible to change the seal on water pump fitted to a 1993 Escort 1.6 zetec?, if so, are any specialist tools needed?, ive got a standard puller and all the tools needed to get the water pump off of the engine (fun job - NOT!), just wondered if its actually possible to strip these pumps down and replace the seals?, any advice would be appreiciated.

I assume you want to od this because the pump is leaking - if so then it really is not worth mucking about with, it would be far easier to get a new good quality pump and just replace it, incidentally also replace the timing belt and tensioner/pulleys at the same time. Regards Dave

Thanks for that Dave, im not 100% certain that its the seal thats leaking at the mo, the engines only been back together for a week after i had to change a burnt out valve, i had the pump off then so i could take the oppertunity to give the block a good flush, maybe i missed tightening one of the bolts properly, or maybe it's the bottom rad hose weeping, damned hard to tell until ive stripped the timing belt, cases and pulleys off again. Its only a very slight weep at the mo, and its running down behind the back of the cam belt cover and down the side of the sump, so maybe it could be the gasket or hose - i say that because ive had a seal fail on one of these pumps before, and that time the water came out from the channel in the pump housing and fell outside the bottom cambelt cover.Shall have a look at the weekend, either way it looks like it as not got onto the belt, well i hope so, because ive only just fitted a new belt and pulley set! Thanks anyway, if its the seal i'll just get a new pump.

What may have happened then is that you have left behind a piece of the old water pump gasket. If you are certain that this is not the case then another option is where the bottom hose goes onto the pump - this sometimes leaks. It shouldn't matter too much if the belt gets wet as long as when you reassemble the engine that you blow out any water residue away from the belt area. Regards Dave
