Hi Colin (& all),
I have also just taken out Miss Adventure. Not much fun in a Force 4 with about 5 minutes of tide left - and using a torch and car headlights to see !
Not much to do - a single rigging and a halyard - and like you a leak - still not sure where from but I suspect the cockpit hatch as the cooker is rusting and damp at the top surface.
I have been down at Ormidale a few times to see if you were about - was wondering if you were going to leave Miss Molly in the water over the winter - I remember during the really cold winter (1997 ?) the sea actually froze there.
I hope to fix the Profurl once and for all - always jamming - but there doesnt seem any obvious cause - after all its a pretty simple device.....(arent they all !)
Am taking Friday off to carry on sanding the rubbing strake. Have been told our climate is no good for varnishing this due to the constant damp but to use Teak Oil instead - any opinions ?
Minus 9 degrees C forecast for Friday - but it still beats the rain.
All the best.

Hi DC
Thats a shame i missed you when you called in. I 'just' got the boat onto its trailer on Monday morning. Reversed the trailer down at low water on Saturday hoping to get her out high water Sunday. Stunning morning and flat calm, the bloody tide wouldnt go high enough to float her on. Monday morning welcomed wind and rain. But it was from the NW, so there was no sea. She went on fine and settled nicely with the help of a couple of chocks. Shes on the pier now waiting for me to get her 'winterised' and get all the whisky, gin, beer and mixers off that somehow miraculously havent been drunk.....!! The mast came off on Tuesday using a tractor and a telegraph ploe with a bit of rope secured to the end.........
I will be selling some boat gear on Ebay over the next month, so if anyone is looking for spare, sails, oilies, etc, feel free to bid away! Col

Hi All,

Finally got Paul Jane out of the water the other week. I had to choose the windiest weekend of the year to try to get the mast down so had to leave it up. PJ is currently at the boatyard on Hayling having the rudder tube replaced before I take her home. The rudder had a lot of slop through wear and last year I noticed the tube had worn through at the top. The yard have now replaced it with a proper bearing but had to cut out the old tube and glass a new one in. Apparently skin fittings had been used and not proper bearings. I now have tufnol bearings which can be easily replaced if they wear. I have also splashed out on new sails as the originals really were on their last legs. Got quotes from loads of sailmakers and went with Kemp sails in the end. Not the cheapest but not far off. For £1200 I get a new loose footed Main (with 3 reef points), new 140% roller Genoa, storm jib with tube to fit over the roller Genoa, and a cruising chute. Will let you know what they are like. Not sure whether I will keep the old ones as spares. Another 2 big jobs for the winter are to replace the cushions and paint the hull topsides. I have yards and yards of material for covering the cushions that I got from ebay so will have plenty for anyone else who may want to do the same.

If anyone wants to contribute to the old website then please drop me a line. Happy to publish anything V650 related. It's been a bit quiet recently.

Happy Sailing

Hi Andy,

You say you have a Vivcity 20. My site and this thread is more around the Vivacity 21 (Vivacity 650). I don't really know much about the Vivacity 20 as I have never owned one. I am not sure if what applies to the 21 also applies to the 20 as they look quite different. Might be worth starting up a new discussion on this site.

There is some info on the web. See the links page off my site.

Calypso living on a boat isn't that easy for my honeymoon we hired a boat and stayed there for a week. We had to make strong knots so it wouldn't float away, we had to clean it every day inside and outside, we had to get all the equipment we needed, some fishing rods (incase one day we decided to go fishing) and plenty of other things. Staying on a boat for a week didn't turn out as we planned, so you have to consider some things before living on a boat no matter how much you love the water.

Hi out there,

If anyone is looking to buy a Vivacity 650 in need of some TLC there is one on Ebay. Cut and paste the link below into your bowser to see.

If the reserve is at the right level could be a bargain. It looks like it has been modified with a new front hatch and new sea toliet. The sliding cooker/coolbox unit also seems to have been removed.

Sorry Its a late reply but I had concerns over the mast step and had a steel frame made to fir inside the boat to provide added support. I then came across a boat with a markedly more deformed deck, it had no repair or support and five yeaurs later it is still OK. So I think I may have over reacted and yet when hammering to windward on a short sea I am very glad we have the extra support.

John,

Better to be on the safe side. Also for peace of mind, as you need to have confidence in your craft otherwise you will always be worrying at the worst possible time, when conditions are bad. Fixing things early before they get get worse or break is always a better economy in the end if you intend to keep her for any lenght of time. Do you have any details of the frame you got fitted and how it was done (Would be a good article for the Vivacity website). I presume you had to cut out the head lining between the fore and after cabins.

I would add the Vivacity is very tough as there is so much fibreglass everywhere.

I have the dimensions of the frame. Initial concern was raised by the slight slope to the deck and a certain translusancy to the fibre glass just to port of the mast.
The internal frames had already been reinforced along the vertical sides of the hatchways with 2 x 2. The roof lining was cut away beneath the foot of the mast and then the steel web bolted to the frame posts. Then two opposing thiun wedges were pushed together to take-up any slack between the coach house roof and the web. These two wedges had been pre placed when bolting the wedge into place. The wedges were only tightened enoiugh to share the load with the existing structure, not to remove it entirely.
It was fitted in about 95/96 and has given not cause for concern since.

Steve,

You may need to buy a new one. I doubt if there is much chance of getting another second-hand but you may be lucky. I got a new main fror my 650 from Kemp Sails for £385. You may find you can get one at about £350 from somewhere else. A new sail certainly makes a big difference. Mine is a much better shape and I can point another 5 degrees higher and depower it by making it flatter when needs be. Sail technology is a bit different to to 20/30 years ago.

Morning DC
How you doing? Was down at Portavadie on Wednesday to catch the ferry to Tarbert, but the ferry was cancelled due to technical probs for an hour, so I thought I'd take a walk up to the pontoons in the harbour. I see Miss Adventure is in and looking good. Have you done the hull? Also how did you get on with the ripped forestay?
Im in the process of fitting a Rotostay to Miss Molly. Other than that she is ready for the water, antifouled and all the relevant glossing done around the coachroof sides and cockpit area, its really smartened it up. My only grouch is the windows, as they are really scruffy when you are close up. They look good just now as they have just been painted, but come august time when the weathers taken the shine off her, the scruffyness will show through. Thought about replacing all the windows, but times an issue with me as i only have weekends to work on her!
Anyway happy sailing and look out for us in wreck bay on 8th July as we are having a family muster. If you see Miss Molly, an MG 30 and a white Virgo Voyager tied together, come ashore and have a beer!!
Cheers...Col

Hi Colin (& all),
Pity I missed you at Port a Mhadaidh - I have been trying to use up holidays with a few days here and there and was down later that afternoon.
Yes the hull was painted - used Intl Perfection - quite an expensive paint - as were the name stickers ! The conditions werent perfect but after dodging the ineviitble wind, rain, frost and snow the results are good.
The forestay problem was 'sorted' by bolting through a strong stainless U bolt through the stay plate (or what was left of it !) and has proven adequate.
New problem is my old 8 HP Yam - after being fully serviced over the winter it lasted a 1/2 hour before the cooling flow stopped - yes - someone did get an earfull the next day .....................
I noticed the old 650 lying at Strachur (it was called 'Boreas of Rhu') has been taken away. Not sure if it was scrapped or being done up - I'll ask around.
Maybe head over to Bute 1st week in July - after all its going to be such a chore using up all these holidays !

A ra best
