My Yamaha 55 outboard was running like a dog - engineer stripped down the carbs (at great expense) which seemed to solve it, but now it won't tick over without cutting out. Starts OK and runs at speed fine. Any ideas?

Hi conrad .sonds to me like you have recontaminated the carbs with foul fuel. The "engineer"should have reccomended that you buy new tank or at very least thoroughly clean out old tank.Unfortunately you may have to take it back..this job should take him no more than 3 hrs to (and that is being very very genorous ie has to take carbs off with his teeth). On the side of the carbs you will see a brass slotted nut you could try removing that and draining the fuel this may help but it very rarely does.sounds like a bit of muck in the pilot jet,on these it doesnt take alot for a low speed problem. It may also be worth doing a compression test the 55hp was a bulletproof engine but they are getting on a bit and i do see more failures as they get older.

Thanks - I really appreciate the advice. The fuel tank & line both look really clean, but who knows.... Compression test is an interesting idea. When I first got this problem I removed the spark plugs (very carefully!) and put in new ones. I noticed a little bit of swarf on the thread of one of the old plugs and prayed it was from the plug rather than the engine casing. If it was from the engine casing I guess that could cause compression problems? and could cause this fault?

Hi conrad .Yes swarf on the end of the plug is not a good sign at all, spark plugs have no moving parts so for swarf to appear would be indicative of a engine failure,If the compression was low on 1 cylinder it would be very unbalanced at low speed. Its also worth noting that the 55hp is a high compression high cc engine on 2 cylinders so they never run really smooth anyway, but they should be able to idle with out problems.I am guessing your engine is making a sneezing noise "chuffing as its known" this would usually indicate carbs.
