You do need a working visa in Oz. But alot of employers prefer it if you remain cash in hand to save their records. There is alot of competition amongst backpackers for all jobs and there is a certain amount od animosity about because of it! If you can make it Cairns is a MUST. Out of all the australia I visited Cairns was a wild place with great access to the Barrier Reef. Invest in a diving course and go out on the reef. A once in a lifetime experience and the only way to see the reef. Go into the outback and see the stars at night Another never forgotten experience. The east coast tends to be far more fun because there is more stuff. The most baffling thing in Oz is the sheer distances involved. It can blow the mind.. Have fun and hope this is of use.. I envy you going to Oz! I look forward to going back again one day in a more luxurious fasion with my wife rather than Backpacking! Cost of living is not disimilar to us, if any thing it is cheaper. Get some bar experience under your belt and you won't be stuck for a job or selling stuff like books, flowers or odds and sods while on the hoof on a commision basis is common. The hostels generally are excellent. ask any backpacker when you land. There will generally be people at the airports touting for guests. Take on and they take you everywhere they are great. get your bearings then decide where else you might like to stay. They don't use pint glasses but you can get beer in pitchers, great for partying. and there is plenty of that! beware of Kings Cross in Sydney. A really exciting place like Soho in London but more vibrant. Gay capital of Oz. TV's wander the street etc. Cairns was fantastic. Real party place. Go with Ozdive and go on the Barrier Reef for 3 days on a boat for about £230. inc. qualification intruction. It is the only way to see the reef. The Gold coast is great but potencially expensive. Beware of hitching. People go missing all the while with no trace. Just look at the posters in the hostels. Just e-mail directly if I can be of any further help at [Log in to view email] Take care and have a great trip. Phil...
