Touché Mark LOL although Glasses guide does not list it as such but as the 'series2 174 or 176', as both are T/A and made as you say 92/94 these must be they!!...suppose that's why it's called a 'guide'??

Well Tony, it can be tested and if you have a serviced exchange unit from me your old one will on return be tested...throughly... as will have been the one you would receive. I could tell you precisely what is stopping yours working and given you had the parts and skills to repair 'that' particular problem?, what is to say something potential more serious is amiss which would then go unchecked. Apart from all that..fixing them is how I make a living!!

hi Gary, thanks for the advise I did have a leak on the new inlet valve after reinstalling so your advise regarding the box being wet could well be the problem.I will give drying a go, many thanks again Dennis

I noticed the pressure release valve was leaking on filling the tank for the first time this season, on removing the valve it was broken on the side. I replaced the valve with a new one. I refilled the tank and ran the water until I had a good even flow, then ignited the heater. After the usual time the hot water came through, but about an hour later the water tank blew off the heater, the tie rod is broken at the heat exchanger. Do you know of anyone in Ireland who repair these heaters? also is there some way of checking that the valve is working.

Hi Michael, It is pure coincidence that the tie rod broke after you replaced the 'pressure relief valve' which is actually now called the 'quick drain valve' or QDV as it does not 'blow' until 50psi and that's to much for a good tie rod never mind a corroded one...hence the name change. It's easy to remove the broken bit of the tie rod as long as you know how? and expensive if you get it wrong, I wouldn't advise practising on your own!! Sorry I can't tell you of repairers in Ireland and as far as I know I am the only 'specialist' this side of the water. I can tell you many from the north send their's to me for overhaul, doubt it's anymore of a problem from the south. Gary http://www.arcsystems.biz

No it ain't normal duckie!!!!....this sound is often from the gas solenoid valve on the water heater so check the battery voltage which could well be to high The valve will work OKish between 10.5 and 14.5 volts, at the lower voltage it will stop working but at and above the higher it will often 'buzz' and can cause permanent damage but it will be the battery charger at fault. If you run the heater without the van being 'hooked up' so the charger is not working and the buzzing stops, you have found the problem

Hi, look back on here and you will find a link to the mk1 manual which should help. The wiring to the temp sensor is straight forward though, the blue wire is earth, the green and yellow wire goes to one side of the gas valve on the bullet connector and the brown to the connection block alongside the other brown wire from the gas valve and connected too and opposite the white wire to the control switch. The gas valve wires are either both blue on the early blue square valve, or brown and blue on the later black round valve, it does not matter which way round these are connected...only the type of connection on the ends make them different. I have a coloured diagram I could send if you email me [Log in to view email]

Gary I've been meaning to thank you for your prompt exchange service on my Cascade 2 burner unit - the new one works fine. I think it was a good idea of mine to start this permanent discussion topic the other year. BTW, Mottingham is in SE London between Eltham and Bromley.

Thanks Dave it's nice to know I am getting something right!!. Yes the thread is doing very well especially since it's name change to make it 'inclusive', all it needs now is /ELECTRIC after gas and before fire in the title. Its just I had never heard of Mottingham and thought you were a bad spelling local!! Bromley I know?, I went there a couple of times when they built the shopping centre to put up the two 'FOOD COURT' signs which I had made and I must say "was rather proud of"...I wonder if they are still there?. I also remember having my first ever 'ham and cheese' sandwich at the 'something' and Compass in what I called Bromley 'village' on the way into the town...very nice it was

Thanks for the response Gary, looks like you were spot on! we did as you suggested using just the battery and the heater fired up fine and there was no buzzing noise! Problem now is the 12 volt circuit keeps cutting out so we cannot keep the heater on long enough to see if the water heats up! I am hoping this is just some wiring issues and nothing more serious! It seems to cut out whenever we turn one of the taps on or lights or for no reason at all!?

Hi Gary Thanks for your prompt reply. Having looked at the tie rod it definitely broke due to corrosion. Is it possible to buy the tie rod and the seals and have the job done by a precision engineering company here in Ireland. Regards Michael

You are going to have to get a better name Duckie? but your problem sounds like the battery is duff if it cannot keep the water heater working when you switch a tap on!!. Most small battery dealers will check your battery and importantly if they find a fault...offer a reason why?. This way you can stop it happening again.

Yes you can buy the bits Michael but I am not sure a firm with no experience of the 'beast' can do the job satisfactorily. Don't get me wrong I am not believe me 'touting for work', what with answering questions here?? I have enough to do!!. The point is it is a question of knack rather than 'precision' skill

Hi Gary, my real name is Sarah by the way! We tried using our new car battery instead of the leisure battery but the same problem occured. Plus, the green light that indicates the battery is working flickers between red and green when we walk around the caravan which makes me wonder if there is a problem on the circuit? Should a car battery be sufficient to run everything ok, i.e heater and taps?
