There are several possible reasons but the main one is one of two safety devices have activated. The first one to check is the thermal fuse which will blow if things get to hot, this is between the blue earth wire and the green/yellow wire from the cable coming out of the water tank. They are reached from behind the rubber cover under the van and checked by connecting a multimeter set to 'Ohms' between the two wires. This should give a reading of no resistance but I think you will find it is dead and you get no reading at all...hence the gas valve does not open. The Second is another 'trip' switch which should reset automatically and is on the end of the two wire the same in the fibreglass sleeve which disappear from the connection block into the fire box. Quick way to check this connection is to connect the two wire these join together directly and see if the gas valve will now open. Another way is the same as before with a multimeter and again you should get a circuit though. Thirdly and before all this check you have about 12 volts between the blue and black wire at the control switch connections during the start cycle and before the red light comes on. Gary http://www.arcsystems.biz P.S, as the proud owner of your vans biggest brother! I wonder has your van black framed windows or aluminium??
My Denaby has black window frames, why do you ask? Grant p.s. I did notice that the wiring to the water heater was getting warm when just connected?
There are two fuses at the heater end and these must be 1amp, first thing to do it make sure they are and if one then blows it will give a clue to the problem. Your black framed windows make it 82 and beyond while the control switch with three lights appeared to say it was much earlier...nice van though
What do I do next? Grant
Regards Michael
Push the fitting in toward the heater and the inner collar will slide back inside the outer, now hold the inner collar in with your finger tip while you pull the fitting back and it should then slide off. Problem can be that the claws that do the gripping dig to deep and won't let it slide off without considerable force to hold the inner collar in
Are they 1 amp? I checked the resistance between both the two wires I can see disappearing into the floor and they show open circuit. Both the two wires?, Floor??.. I am not with you on this Grant What do I do next? Give us a ring tomorrow....numbers are on the website
Got the fittings off without a problem, thanks. Isn't life so easy when you know the proper way to do things. Regards Michael
I have just taken delivery of a Abi Award Daystar 1984. We are also new to owning a caravan especially one that needs a bit of work doing to it. I would like to know which carver water boiler we have... under the bench seat is a water boiler in a black cover with insulation. next to it is a box of wires . On the front of the bench is a black control unit with 3 leds. next to the zig unit on opp wall is a carver control unit in creme and gives a green light when turned on. If any other caravan enthusiasts could identify the water heater and fire which is seperate also and made by carver. I would also like to know of any manuals for the van ...i have found a source of manuals for all heaters but i dont know which water heater we have as they dont give pictures also the gas heater.

The fires control switch sounds like it is to a Carver 'Caravelle' which is a fully automatic thermostatically controlled heating system. When switched on the fire should light and heat the van until the set temp is reached and then switch off, as the temp drops a little it should relight and so on. The green light should flash if it reaches the end of the 10 second start cycle and the flame has not lit, much the same as the red light on the water heater. When they work they are great but not many caravan 'fitters' like playing with them when they don't??. With both these heaters take a note of my website, hopefully you won't but you may well need it??
Thankyou very much indeed for this information. Your advice is brilliant help. Best regards Pete

would you know where i could get a wiring diagram for the truma water boiler i have in the van. Next to the boiler is a black electrical box , with cover missing. In the box is a loose circuit board with some rogueish wiring and bad soldering.Outside the bench seat is the control unit with l.e.d's I have not yet tested the water heating system and would feel happier to go over the wiring with a schematic diagram of the system inc wiring. Also would you be able to tell me what model the fire is likely to be in this 1984 van... it has a creme carver control stat on the wall with a single green l.e.d .The fire itself has no knobs or igniter buttons and no markings on chocolate cover fire front. Which gas would be more appropriate for the caravan heating? blue or red ? Any more of your vast knowledge would be appreciated. regards Pete
your wiring is as follows but the switch is to the left and the boiler connections to the right. Each connector has a coloured dot whic goes to the edge of the circuit board. The switch is wired left to right as follows Blue, brown, yellow, white, red, black, space, purple, grey green. The boiler is, two blues and a black, green, yellow, flame recognition semi clear wire , the next two are a loop to the temp sensor, next two a loop to the over temp sensor which is a one go and it blows affair, and lastly red. The over temp should have a circuit though it with no resistance and the temp sensor a high resistance that varies with temperature.
best regards Pete
