I have took the control unit apart, when putting the cable block back onto the switch, if I wiggle it around and only have certain cables connected, I can hear the spark / gas valve / once or twice the burner light! But its so delicate I can't possible get it working.

Is it possible to buy a new control switch with cable?

Or is maybe a sensor not working properly which means I shouldn't be possibly bypassing any protection mode!?

A wire colour guide would be very much appreciated!

Manually putting the red 12v to the blue gas valve cable opens the valve, and then with that open (electromagnet?) also 12v to green spark cable successfully lights the burner, get hot water out of tap etc.

Of course there is no thermostat cut out or flame sensor so this is not really safe, but leaves me to believe its purly the control box which is at fault?

Anyone know where I can get a replacement MK1 control panel or compatbile?

I have a 1992 ABI Celebration caravan fitted with a Carver Cascade 2 water heater. I fitted a new burner unit 15 months ago along with a new switch box. All has been ok since then until last weekend when the red light comes on after about 10 seconds, even though I've tried it several times (allowing 3 minutes between each attempt, as recommended by Carver). There is full water flow from both hot taps and there is gas supply to the caravan heater and cooker. I cannot hear any clicks from the solenoid and so am beginning to think that might have failed. Both fuses in the switch box are intact. Is the guarantee for the burner unit 12 months duration? I am using a 4.1/2kg Butane gas bottle fitted with a gas level indicator next to the regulator, this is showing green which indicates gas available. Any help or advice will be appreciated. JD.

JD, sorry for delay but work is mental, not enough hours in the day!

Are you talking my warranty or Truma's, Truma should give 2yrs on new stuff but not always, my serviced exchange units are a minimum of 6 months.

First the red coming on means the module is trying to work.
If you listen you should hear the gas valve open and the tick of the spark, if the valve does not open then it cannot light and you won't smell gas. If the valve opens but not spark then it still cannot light but you should smell gas.
Finally it could be lighting but the electronic control does not register it's lit, this will mean it still stops and shows the red light.

While listening you should stand outside close to the water heater but to one side, DO NOT put your face to close to the front of the flue.
Use your hand over the top of the flue to feel heat if it does light.

Orange, I've no exact idea why they do this but it's fairly common, it boils down to it needs a proper service.

I can say it won't be one thing but several small problems that cause it

I have a Rapide model Carver Cascade water heater which works fine. The gas heater ignites normally, but when it does not ignite due to lack of gas, the red light does not light up, the switch is the press button type and was purchased new. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cable, both on the switch and on the burner module. Is there any test I can do to see if the red LED is OK, or has anybody any other suggestions? Thanks Chas.

Charles, it depends on the year, the fault could lay with early modules (88-91) but more lately and overall it will be a fault on the control switch

Gary. Thanks for info. I am not sure of the age off hand, but I think it is a later model. I think it is best if I live with the fault. I have now learned how to spell you name, on R only. Thanks again, you do a eonderful job for free. Charles

Hi, Gary. Thanks for the reply. I have nasal problems and my sense of smell is very poor. I took my wife to the caravan ( it's at a storage yard about a mile from where I live) last Saturday afternoon. I disconnected the burner unit from the van and then turned the gas bottle on, my wife said she could smell the gas coming from the feed pipe, so that seems ok. I then reinstalled the burner unit and connected the battery (new) and water supply system. My wife listened outside with the cover off the burner unit whilst I operated the switch inside the van. As before the red light came on after a few seconds and my wife hadn't heard any clicks or seen any sparks - dead as a doornail. We tried this several times to no effect, which makes me think that it may be the solenoid that's at fault. As I said I've had the burner only 15 months - I didn't buy the unit direct from Truma but from a caravan accessory shop and so I'm not sure how long the guarantee is for but I suspect, with my luck, only 12 months. If I have no luck with the supplier would you be able to tell me what's wrong if I sent it to you? I can't see that it's the switch as both the green and red lights are working perfectly. Regards, JD.

JD, it's an odd fault on a young module so I would try and get it replaced first, try ringing Truma technical, they should at least tell you how long the warranty is!! http://www.trumauk.co.uk for the number.
Tip; tell them how little it's been used in those 15 months, ie it should work for more than a few days!

If that fails then I'll fix it, don't buy another new one

Phil the problem is very common, having said that it can depend on year and or the water, I've seen 1985 models as good as new and 94 is another excellent vintage, however 99/2000 are two very bad years.
Most common is holes in the tank, less common are hole in the heat exchanger
Heat exchangers have never been a spare part, new tanks have been unavailable since last year so only solution in both cases is repair.
With that in mind, you can be sure then I've developed a fool proof method of permanent repair!
