Simple Rusper, the control switch is faulty and I would put money on it being in a 1992 caravan? £18 serviced exchange. Gary http://www.arcsystems.biz

Please send money to Brian at .......... Ha HaIt's funny you mention Lisa, I see hundreds of modules with her name on them and sometimes wonder just who she is apart from the most prolific tester Carver had!!. The reason I though the module was 92 is this is the only one that causes damage to the switch...at least to my knowledge and the 95/96 vintage has it's own problems. Point is I am not sure it is the switch now?.

OK Garry, £18-00 back in pocket, I measured the voltage on the module at pin 5? and it was about 7.2 V when running and went down to 0.5V with the lead pluged in properly. I say pin 5 but i am not sure that the din numbering system works like that, anyway the pin furthest from the 12V supply. Regards Brian

Just so we are clear, the system uses standard 7 pin sockets but only five pin plugs, it won't work with seven pin plugs.

Thanks for the reply Gary, Yes using the origional 5 pin cable. I replaced all the transistors in the switch unit one of which seems to be duff. Now working!! How does the burner module sense a flame? can't see a thermocouple or UV detector or does it use the temperature from the thermistor? Do you have a circuit diagram that you would be willing to share? Regards Brian

My cascade 2 water heater when on mains always used to be completely silent. It has now started making a whining sound when the heater element is on. Have you any idea what may be causing this? Does the heater element need descaling? I have just been using it extensively for 10 weeks. Cheers Paul

I have a Carver Cascade 2 water heater fitted to a Bailey Pageant Cabriolet van of 1985 vintage. It has started to buzz slightly, intermittently when it is switched on. Sounds like a pump buzzing. Does anyone know if there is a "user replaceable" pump in the unit?

Alunr There is no pump in my one. Gary may have some idea what is buzzing. Brian

Two very similar questions from Alunr and Paul but only one is easy...he says!!. Alunr, yours is 'gas only' so the only thing to cause the buzzing is the gas solenoid valve which in turn I think will be over voltage from the battery charger making it buzz. Try running it without mains hook up and see if t is quite on battery alone?. Having said that if it is the original burner module it's now 20 years old!!!As for your problem Paul, I have seen many elements with thick coats of scale but nobody has complained of it causing noise!, in fact no one has complained of noise before on mains heating... I am not sure what to think, have you just had your ears de-waxed???? P.S, what year is your van?

Gary. It's a 1993 Lunar Clubman. It's the sort of noise a kettle makes when coming to the boil, but not as loud as is typical with kettles. The curious thing is that it has only been doing it for the last two weeks out of ten. It is clearly associated with the element being on as the sound slowly crescendos after the switch on thermostat click, and fades out on the switch off click. (I've subsequently taken the jacket off to listen further.) The other curious thing is that the on cycle seems very short - only about a minute, would that be normal? I suppose I could measure the current it is pulling. Cheers Paul. P.s. I was thinking of having my ears de-waxed, but if this is what it does to electical equipment, I don't think I'll risk it!

Hi Paul, from cold it takes about 45 minutes to reach 70degC and switch off, after that it will cycle to keep the water hot. It seems to me the normal temperature stat is faulty and what you are hearing is the water getting to hot before it switches off or the over temp stat catches it and switches off around 90degC!!....are you needing to reset the over-temp at all and are you getting steam from the taps?? If I am right a new stat is £10 including postage and is easy to change. Regards Gary http://www.arcsystems.biz PPS on the subject of ear de-waxing, my daughter lays my head in her lap, sticks a paper funnel she gets from Boots in a lughole and then sets light to it!!! Sounds drastic but it really works and a lot more pleasant an experience than the alternatives

Hi Gary. I have never had to reset the over temp. I shall do some more tests and come back to you. 45 mins is about what mine takes from cold. The 1 minute figure was the on cycle time after it had stabilised. Struck me as being rather short. I shall measure the temp on the boiler jacket, if I can, and look for steam. Cheers Paul PPS You're joking?

No I am not joking, I think it must be a Chinese in origin but it's sold in chemists for about tenner and you would be amazed what it drags out. As far as I can make out it works by vacuum caused by the flame sucking oxygen and anything else!! from inside the ear. It's completely painless and takes about 5 minutes a side. Another good point is you don't have to mess about with drops or Olive oil beforehand. The only downside is you need an obliging assistant...with a strong stomach!!!!

I am fitting a used Carver 2 water heater in my ABI Target, but have come across a problem fitting the gas feed pipe. Intstead of an "olive" the pipe has what seems to be a stepped fitting. The original gas pipe had been cut off just before the nut, so I can't use that. My local caravan shop only stocks the ordinary olives. Does any one know where I can buy one of these stepped type fittings ?Thanks Alan

Not from a caravan shop, it's an hydraulic fitting from a trucks braking system!!. Try a search for 'Pirtek' they are in most towns. The olive you speak of is for 5/16" (8mm) pipe, most vans use 1/4" pipe to feed the Cascade and thats a different olive again to reduce it down. I have some of these if you need this size. Gary http://www.arcsystems.biz Perhaps you can help Suz with fitting hers??
