Hi there got a problem with my carver cascade mk 2 gas water heater ,went to france for 2 weeks in the van noticed that when i put the water heater on we had some slightly black smoke comiming from the outside cowl but it still managed to heat the water , then the last day could not get it to work so i took off the cowl and cover to find the burner unit was all clogged up with black soot, cleaned it out and got it to work , but im not happy with the blake smoke so my question is , do i need to replace the burner unit and is that what the fault is cheers

Sorry for the delay in replying to these last few questions but I'm forever busy these days and finding it hard to find the time. I know it's not easy trawling through past Q&A's but if I know the answers been given plenty of times before, I'll be reluctant to repeat an answer again while I'm so busy.

Sl, you have the smaller 830W element so it is a bit slow, however, it should be giving some hot water after half an hour. Not really sure what might be wrong if anything? I've heard it said limescale building up on the element will cause this but I'm sceptical about that? Perhaps it's not working at all? the resistance across the element pins should be 84 to 90 ohms, across the two thermostats you should have no resistance

Gaz again, your 'burner module' is faulty, this could be something to do with the leak if water has got into modules control black box under the tank.It may dry out and then work but if not, or not wet, then it will need replacing and you can get a serviced exchange module from me. --------------------------------------------------- Padster, you have a yellow flame instead of a bright blue one, this is the cause of the smoke, the soot, and plenty of carbon monoxide!! Solution is to replace the 'burner module', you can get that from me on a serviced exchange basis a lot more cheaply than new. Please contact direct for details

Maybe a bit late to help you but I recently repaired one of these. Could help others? 1. drill out but end of central rod using a drill about the tapping size for the thread. Retap the hole to suit a replacement stainless steel threaded rod, about 12 mm. When you have the new threaded hole, cut the threaded rod to length and install using some RTV as a thread seal. Reassemble heater tank, sealing with some RTV as you go to ensure water tightness. Check for any leaks and return to service. Brian

hi gary, thanks for the reply. I am away this weekend so will give it a proper tryout to see if the elctric does work.the dealers just had it on for half an hour and it did show signs of vague warmth,so will see if it warms the water enough...presumably I would need the element replacing if it was failing[do they fail progressively or is it a case of one day they give up the ghost having worked the day before? }.thanks for your valuable info. anywaya-such knowledge really is priceless.

Hi Gary, My Carver Cascade 2GE doesn't work on gas (plenty of gas on board and battery ok) but it works ok on 240v on my '93 Ducato. I haven't really bothered about it but I find that now I am using more and more cl's with no electric so gas powered hot water would be an asset. At the last habitation check I recall being told tha something has 'burnt out' on the gas side of the water heater ... sorry to be so vague but I just cannot remember what I was told at the time!Any suggestions?? Also what is the difference between the Cascade 2 and the Cascade 2GE? Many Thanks, Mike

Mike, I'm afraid your description is far to vague to offer any real suggestions, you will need to try and give me more to go on The Cascade 2 is gas only heating, the GE stands for gas/electric and is simply adding 240v electric heating to the basic model

Gaffer, I have all the common spares needed for the mk1 Cascade, your original problem sounds like the gas valves not opening and this probably means it's overheated and blown the thermal fuse The fuse connects the green/yellow wire to the blue earth wire, make sure then you have continuity between these to wires.

Hiya10, the only thing that springs to mind is one of the nuts that holds the burner to the bracket is loose, this is also an earth connection and by pressing your improving the connection.I can say 1994 as far as 'vintage' goes is the best

Hi there, I have a Valliant water heater in my 1987 Express Autosleeper. In normal conditions the boiler is lit and the pilot light is on. I turn the hot water tap on and the boiler fires up and heats the water instantly. The shower has never been right as the hose was 'teed' off the hot water outlet and obviously was always boiling hot. So this week i have changed it, and put the shower hose on the mixer outlet at the bottom of the boiler in the middle. Plumbed it all in and lit the boiler, pilot light is normal. Turn the hot water on and the boiler doesn't fire up and heat the water. Any ideas??
