Can anyone tell me what the two buttons on the remote acually do?
94 Xantia bought with no handbook

One unlocks the doors and the other locks them.

Both buttons seem to both lock AND unlock the doors - is it anything to do with he immobiliser???

One button locks and unlocks the doors, the other should dead lock the doos, IE. if someone should break in into the car then they cannot open the doors even from the inside if it is dead locked, hope that helps.

Normally the front button unlocks and locks the car and the rear applies the deadlocks and arms the alarm.
